The books in the Pirates of the Caribbean: Jack Sparrow series are about Jack Sparrow's teen years before he becomes a pirate. The series is published by Disney Press and was written as a literary companion to the Pirates of the Caribbean films. It is followed by Pirates of the Caribbean: The Price of Freedom and the series Pirates of the Caribbean: Legends of the Brethren Court, set thirteen years before the film Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. The series was written by Liz Braswell, Carla Jablonski, Tui T. Sutherland and other authors under the shared pseudonym of Rob Kidd.

In Their Own Story

Jack Sparrow is the captain of the Barnacle. His crew includes Fitzwilliam P. Dalton III, a young British aristocrat tired of his rich and pampered lifestyle who Jack nicknamed "Fitzy"; Arabella Smith, an adolescent barmaid with a very retentive memory and a walking encyclopedia of random facts; Jean Magliore, a thirteen-year-old boy from New Orleans who often spouts French phrases; Constance Magliore, Jean's sister who was turned into a cat by Tia Dalma; and Tumen, a Mayan from the Yucatán sold into slavery by pirates. Jack's father is Captain Teague, who calls Jack by the name "Jackie" and is Keeper of the Pirate Code. Jack and his crew faced Captain Torrents, a vicious pirate captain with the ability to control storms, in the first book. They also encountered Left Foot Louis, a notorious pirate with two left feet who kidnapped Arabella's mother and searched for the Sword of Cortés.

Reader's Guide

The series follows Jack Sparrow's adventures before he becomes a pirate. In the fourth book, the ghost of Spanish conquistador Hernán Cortés appears, and his spirit battles the spirit of former Aztec emperor Moctezuma. Other characters include Madame Minuit, a powerful and seductive creole witch from New Orleans with power over snakes who stole a magical amulet from Tumen's people; Tim Hawk, a young boy under her control who later joined the Barnacle's crew; Laura Smith, a notorious pirate and Arabella's mother who has a habit of biting her bottom lip; Mr. Silverback, a strange pirate with a crystal leg and tooth enabling strange powers; Tia Dalma, a powerful voodoo priestess and old acquaintance of Jack Sparrow; Davy Jones, a mighty heartless, immortal seaman; Mr. Reece, the first mate of Laura Smith; and Billy Turner, who later becomes Bootstrap Bill Turner and is in love with Arabella.
